I used every statistician/gambler/nerd's favorite website (
http://www.random.org/) to come up with a draft order. I gave myself the last pick because I'm fine with whatever.
Here it is:
- ?: Runner 4
- Todd: Runner 9
- Mike: Runner 8
- Regan: Runner 3
- Ruth: Runner 11
- Willie: Runner 12
- Sue: Runner 10
- Rebecca: Runner 2
- Adolfo: Runner 7
- Alma: Runner 5
- Angie: Runner 1
- Ryan: Runner 6
Over the next week or so, let's start drafting distances. You can send me an email (
martinry@gmail.com) with the leg you want and I'll keep things updated. Here is the website*:
http://www.ragnarrelay.com/race/greatriver/runner_chart
*Make sure to refresh after you open it. For some reason, it pretends that the 3rd leg has a 34 mile leg as part of it. If you refresh, it changes to something considerably shorter.
Hi Guys,
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming we don't HAVE to do it this way, right? I'm OK with randomness, but it is possible for us to improve on it. We could ask everybody whether they would rather run "long" or "shorter and faster", then look at best recent times of people in those two categories and try to come up with a list that makes people happy and minimizes our total time.
I've been giving this some thought partly because my recent 5k has made me uncertain as to whether I can run all three legs. Running does not make my old knees happy. I could probably run three if they are pretty short. I might need to racewalk one or two legs, and then the question becomes should I do shorter legs (because my walking is probably slower than everybody's running) or a longer leg (if nobody wants to do the long legs, I know I can walk the three longest with no problems).
Just a thought...but maybe we don't want to make this thing that complicated! I'm overthinking, right?
No, we certainly don't have to do it this way and I'm fine if we want to come up with another approach. Right now, it seems that most people would prefer shorter legs so I'm a little worried about trying to base it purely/mostly on preference.
DeleteI'm happy to take the longest distance. I don't think I will run it well but I feel like I can probably run it. Are there others who feel comfortable with any distance?
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI had similar thoughts about approaching the legs, but the system above is also okay with me.
Distance: I'd be willing to take a total milage of up to 18 or what have you. (Not the absolute highest, but a good chunk of miles). I'm also okay with legs of 5-9 miles. (My shortest run when I'm serious about this stuff is usually 4 miles.)
My Quirks: My preference would be more with timing. I'm a night person. I like running between 9 am and 3 am (I'm including the night legs here). I can run okay in heat. So I might be a good mid-early runner, or a good later runner, for our team.
Speed: Also, just so you are all prepared: I am slow (right now, 10-11 minute miles avg in "easy," not "very hard," conditions.)
Overall: aside from "not #1" and "not the most miles," I'm pretty open.
I just did some math on this and the average total distance is 16.5 miles. Seven legs are within 1.5 miles of that but there are five outliers (legs 3, 5, 9, 11, and 12).
ReplyDeleteTwo of these are considerably shorter than the rest (legs 3 and 11 are 11.9 miles and 13.5 miles, respectively). Legs 5, 9, and 12 are a couple miles longer than average.
Based on this, I have two questions: 1) Does anyone feel like they really NEED one of the two shorter ones (i.e., feels they wouldn't be able to finish if it were longer than 13.5 miles total)? 2) Would anyone prefer one of the longer ones?
You can email me at martinry@gmail to let me know.
I've heard from everyone on preferred distances and it seems like we are in pretty good shape as far as variety/flexibility. In fact, almost everyone choosing later in the process feel comfortable with longer distance. Adolfo, who chooses late, has expressed interest in a short to midlength distance so if we could try and save him one of those, that would be great. Otherwise, why don't we just go through the picks and see where we end up. We can make some adjustments after if we want to try and swap positions or something. It seems like we are all pretty flexible.
